Update: The Painted Veil

The Painted Veil stars Edward Norton and Naomi Watts in a lush and visually stunning of the Somerset Maugham novel of the same name. The pair play a couple who marry for the wrong reasons, across a gulf of class and personality differences.

After realizing that his wife if having an affair, Dr. Fane volunteers to attend a cholera epidemic out in the provinces, and brings Kitty. Boredom eventually leads her to the convent and orphanage, and slowly, the two grow to know each other.

In a way, this is a reverse love story. Most love stories start with passion and fire and devolve into cold silences and submerged anger. This one begins with the resentment and allows the characters to discover both themselves and what there could be in their relationship.

Liev Schreiber does a wonderful job as the lover, and, indeed, all acting performances are note-perfect and enjoyable to watch.
